Oversized & heavy equipment

Heavy Haul

Vehicles, heavy machinery, tractors and construction equipment: freight that rolls on its own wheels or requires a trailer built to carry its weight and dimensions. We match the load with a carrier experienced in heavy haul transportation.

When to choose it

When a load needs heavy haul

This is freight that determines its own conditions: what carries it, which route it takes and, often, what permits it needs before it moves.

  • It rolls

Trucks, tractors, agricultural and construction machinery that can be driven onto the trailer instead of lifted.

  • It’s over height

A tall machine on a standard deck can exceed legal height limits. A lowboy sits closer to the ground, providing more clearance for the load.

  • It’s over weight

Heavy loads may require additional axles to distribute the weight, which can affect both the trailer configuration and the route.

  • The route is part of the load

Bridges, clearances and state-specific requirements can determine what is possible before anything is booked.

What to expect

How we handle a heavy haul

These moves are planned before the truck ever shows up. The right equipment, route and requirements need to be clear before the load is booked.

  • What it is, exactly

Make, model, dimensions and weight. With heavy haul freight, approximate figures are not enough to quote and plan the move accurately.

  • The trailer the load requires

Lowboy, removable gooseneck or another heavy-haul configuration, depending on the load’s height, weight, dimensions and how it needs to be loaded.

  • What the move requires

We confirm the equipment, route and other requirements with the carrier before the move is booked.

  • Carriers with the experience

We work with carrier partners under established agreements and rates, with the equipment and experience required for heavy haul freight.

FAQ

Questions about Heavy haul

What is heavy haul?

Heavy haul is the transportation of freight that exceeds the weight or dimensional limits of standard equipment and requires specialized trailers, routing and, often, permits. Common examples include heavy machinery, vehicles and construction equipment.

You used to call this RoRo. Is it the same thing?

Not exactly. RoRo (roll-on/roll-off) describes a type of ocean vessel and how cargo is loaded onto it. On the road, that same cargo may move as heavy haul or specialized transport. We coordinate the ground transportation.

Can the equipment be driven onto the trailer?

Often, yes. If the equipment is operational and can be driven, it may be loaded directly onto the trailer. Tell us whether the machine runs and moves on its own, as that can affect the equipment and loading plan.

What about permits?

Permit requirements depend on the load, its dimensions, weight and the states it travels through. We coordinate with the carrier to determine what the move requires and help manage the permitting process. Tell us what you are moving and where it is going, and we’ll help determine the requirements.

Who operates the equipment?

The carrier does. We work with carrier partners under established agreements and rates, and select the one whose equipment and experience fit the load.

What do you need to quote it?

The make and model, dimensions and weight, whether the equipment runs and moves on its own, pickup and delivery locations, and your preferred dates.

Next options

Other ways to move your freight

  • Full Truckload (FTL)

A dedicated truck or trailer for your shipment, providing direct transportation from pickup to delivery without sharing trailer space with other freight.

  • Drayage

The transportation of a container between the port or rail ramp and its next destination.
